For more than twenty years the

Haydn Quartet has been ‘Quartet in

Residence’ at the Esterhazy Castle in

Eisenstatdt, where Haydn himself worked

from 1761 until his death in 1809.

 

The Quartet has delighted audiences in more

than 300 concerts there, performing both in

the famous Haydn Hall with, as the Quartet’s

numerous recordings testify, its

extraordinarily good acoustics and in the

splendid Chamber Music Halls.


From its seat in the castle the quartet

undertakes extended tours in nearly every

country of Europe as well as in Asia and

America.

 

The Quartet has played in Carnegie Hall in

New York and has performed several times

in the famous National Centre for the

Performing Arts in Beijing. On its frequent

Far East tours it has given concerts in,

among other places, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, at the Macau Festival and most recently at the Music Conservatory in Beijing where its members also gave master classes.

 

After a charity concert for tsunami victims in Bangkok, the quartet was granted a private audience with HRH Princess Galyani of Thailand and later returned after her death to play a concert in her memory.


During the Haydn centenary year 2009 the Quartet performed all Haydn’s string quartets in a cycle of 18 performances in the imperial St Michael’s Church in Vienna.Among the many live recordings of the Quartet are broadcasts on Radio Bartok in Hungary, on Austrian Radio, North German Radio and in Zagreb, Beijing and Macao.

The Quartet performs regularly in the Glienecke Castle Concert Series in Berlin.In 2011 the Quartet performed Haydn’s ‘Seven Last Words’ in France, with Maestro Georges Pretre as the Evangelist.

More recently the Quartet has devoted itself increasingly to contemporary music, giving composer-portraits and first performances in collaboration with, among others, Austrian Radio.

In 2012 the Quartet was invited by the German Music Council to record and give the first performance of Daniel Smutny’s String Quartet no 1.In Austria the Quartet performs at the Vienna Concert Hall, at the Styriate in Graz, the Haydn Festival in Eisenstadt, the Music Institute in Klagenfurt, the Kitzbuehl Summer Concert Season and the International Schubert Days in Vienna. It also regularly accompanies the leading actor Bruno Ganz in Readings at the Kobersdorf Synagogue. Among its CDs are performances with the cellist Rudolf Leopold and the soprano Cornelia Horak.
